| BRITISH COMICS
British comics by their very nature have to be treated slightly differently to American comics. The following must always be considered when purchasing vintage British comics. 1. The paper quality is usually fairly poor and tends to at very least yellow at the edges. 2. The front page was usually the same quality as the interior pages and printed as part of the comic strip. Unlike American comics there were not many British comics printed with a higher quality paper cover to offer that little bit more protection over the years. 3. The edges of the pages were often slightly larger than the cover and tend to take damage easily. 4. Comics were often of irregular size. Even within a title the size changes frequently at times. Large format comics such as Eagle and TV21 have always been difficult to store. Many British comics do not have straight cut edges but uneven edges. As a result of this many copies get damaged (particularly at the edges). 5. Newsagents frequently marked the customers name on the front page or back page of the comic and they also frequently folded the comic (especially larger ones) for delivery. 6. British comics tend to be weekly and as such odd issues of most British comics are of limited use to collectors. While some long term collectors are looking for odd issues to complete collections (mostly acquired many years ago), most modern collectors are looking for solid runs or story sets when purchasing. |
