Tower Comics were published in the mid to late 1960s and were one of the first (if not the first) creator produced line of comics. Some of the top comic talents of the day such as Wally Wood and Gil Kane produced work for Tower Comics. Other work schedules by the creators and limited access to national distribution on newsstands were factors which ultimately led to a very short run of these fondly remembered titles. The biggest problem however that Tower Comics faced was although they were larger paged issues than standard comics they were also more than twice the standard 12c price of other publishers . They retailed on the newsstands 25c a comic. As you can also see from the cover dates Tower Comics had a pretty uneven publishing schedule at times. What is often forgotten is that Tower Comics also produced teen humour titles. Tippy Teen is very much in The Archie Comics style and formula and the teen related humour titles actually saw more published issues than any of the Super Hero comic titles. |
