WARIOR MAGAZINE UK ISSUES 1 to 26

Miracleman / Marvelman a very brief history of UK and USA publication.

The original Miracleman strips published by Eclipse came from the British magazine Warrior. To keep everything in order these original magazines are also shown on this page.  Warrior had a few other strips licensed for publication in the USA such as Laser Eraser and Pressbutton and V for Vendetta.

Miracleman / Marvelman a very brief history.

Throughout the 1950s the Fawcet Captain Marvel and Marvel Family titles weere reprinted in the UK in Black & White comics format by L. Miller comics. When the lawsuit between Fawcett and DC was finally settled in 1953/1954 Fawcet ceased publication of the Captain Marvel comics line of characters. This cancelation left L. Miller in the UK without their best selling title. The answer?....create your own. Instead of  Captain Marvel, Captain Marvel Jnr and Mary Marvel we now had Marvelman, Young Marvelman and Kid Marvelman.  The Marvelman Family of adventures ran through the rest of the 1950s and into the 1960s.

In the 1980s the characters were brought back to life and updated in Warrior Magazine. Warrior was an anthology magazine publishing work by many of the top British writers and artists of the time.  The contents were black & white and magazine sized.  Each issue contained maybe 6 pages or so of a particular story line.  It is these comic strips which Eclipse comics licensed and reformated in a smaller size for the American market when the first few issues  introduced Marvelman to an American public. Later Eclipse issues were new strips that were not in the original UK Warrior magazine. For the first time the strips were also now in colour and several issues of Warrior comic art would be needed to fill one American issue. The other big change was that by this time Marvel comics would not allow the use of the Marvelman name in the USA. The name was now changed to Miracleman.  The change in art ,writing  and direction of the 1980s strip was far removed from the fairly basic original comic strips of the 1950s/1960s.  These early strips were cleverly written into the new story line as a dream induced false memories / fantasies.

Like all the characters in Warrior the strips were rotated so not every issue features Miracleman/Marvelman.

The above outline is a rather simplistic one and does not take into account any of the long running ownership and copyright disputes over the Warrior / Eclipse material.  These issues are well outside the scope of this website to comment upon.
